An Old School Affair

NBS Convocation Ball 2007- “An Old School Affair” was a smashing success on the 28th July 2007 at the posh “The Fullerton hotel.” Decked out in stylish suits and donning elegant dresses which screamed old-school, 420 attendees turned up for the Ball in glamour and style.

As early as 5.00p.m., attendees started arriving in clusters for the cocktail reception. It was the best time to catch up with friends, take photos and indulge in crystal tattooing, caricature, silhouette cutting and the performance of our walk-about magician, Han Long, as part of pre-dinner activities. Our hired professional photographers, Xiaobin and David (see below), also combed the reception area for snapshots of gorgeous ladies and charming gentlemen that were to be uploaded onto our flickr website.

The affair in the Ballroom officially began at 730p.m. with an opening video clip done by Hongwei, our creative director. Having grabbed the attention of the graduands, the emcee opened the Ball for our first performance of the night, a magic show titled Mysteriously Magical” by Jason Law who customised his magic tricks to suit our old school theme. Other than the usual card tricks, Jason played around with Luu Haur’s 50 dollars bill, making it disappear and reappear. He also used his psychic powers to get the mobile number of our lovely Kit Lam and revealed it to all the hopeful guys out there at the same time.

By the time the graduands were all warmed up and had their stomachs half-filled, theBattle of the Best began. Dezlee Han, who was our emcee for the night, split the Ballroom into 2 groups- the roaring 20s and 30s, which competed against each other to earn points. After all, the winning side (Yes, all 21 tables!) gets one bottle of sparkling juice each to toast and to savour! The professional Dezlee managed to keep the Ballroom incessantly high for the entire night, with tables tasked to find items that formed Old-School-Affair; babes and hunks called up on stage to answer questions and the graduands doing the Hoo!, Ha! with directions by Dezlee, to the rhythm of Kung Fu Fighting. We also had the flexible Marcus entertain us with some butt action!

Next up was a Lindy Hop dance number by professional dance group, Jazz Inc. who earlier performed at the NDP preview. It was an enjoyable fast number that was old school and fascinating with dance tricks and aerials that only made our jaws drop in amazement. The other highlight of “An Old School Affair”, The Man & Lady of the Night went to charismatic Jiaqi and the stunning Yingni who impressed us with the best Indian dance performance ever. What a night for the both of them as they get to take home 1 Perlini’s Silver gift set and 1 L’Oreal hamper each! The other participants- Huiling, Ting Kang, Jiamei, Jacky, Pierre and Amelia also bagged for themselves consolation prizes!

Rounding off the night was a 10 minutes long video clip that evoked in us 3 years worth of bittersweet memories in NBS. From FOC to tutorial classes to professors and grad trips, the video made some of the attendees smudge their mascaras with glistening tears that formed; while others laughed reminiscing silly moments captured on screen. Yes, it’s an end, but it’s also a beginning for all of us.

Last but not least was the much anticipated lucky draw. The prize winners were all smiles for the night, and our first prize- Sony T20 camera, went to Miss Dian Lin of Table 13. Special mention definitely goes to the NBS Alumni Affairs Association for sponsoring our top 3 prizes.

Of course, the Ball would never have been successful without dedicated committee members who have worked extremely hard to make “An Old School Affair” enjoyable for the 420 attendees at the Ball. Heartfelt gratitude certainly goes to the NBS Alumni Affairs Office and the Accountancy & Business Club for making this event possible. Credit also goes to sponsors which include Ernst & Young, L’Oreal, Foo Kon Tan Grant Thornton, Lins Ad, Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore, JobsFactory, HSBC, Shell, Optical 88, Amore Fitness, Jazz Inc., Beaute de Kose, Perlini’s Silver, AV Media and Pandora’s Box.

An Old School Affair” was not only made possible- it is a smashing success!

Free Corkage Waiver- How it works at An Old School Affair!

Free corkage waiver will be given to early birds. There are 15 sets of tags and stickers to be given out so that corkage fee will be waived! If you are thinking of bringing a bottle of wine or hard liquor to An Old School Affair, do ensure that it's duty paid 750ml bottles! (Maximum serving for one bottle: 6)

So what do you do after you get them? The sticker goes onto the bottle. When you want the drinks served, just present both the tag and the bottle (with the sticker on it) to the hotel staff. And W-a-L-a, the corkage fee will be waived! If however you fail to get free corkage waiver, don't fret! Just whip out $35.00 nett for a bottle of wine and $47.00 nett for hard liquor (to be paid in cash) and your alcoholic drinks will be served to you!

Alternatively, you can always stick to free flow of soft drinks and mixers! Stay Tuned!

FAQ 6: Sigh. What should I do after the Ball has ended?

This page will be found in your program booklet as well.

Fretting over nothing to do after the Ball has ended? At a high now but don't know where to go? For those who have not planned any activities yet and just want to chill out with friends, we have collaborated with some of the pubs along Boat Quay for better drink deals just for
YOU cause Hey, it's your night!

Participating pubs along Boat Quay include 1) The Penny Black, 2) Harry's Bar, 3) BQ Bar, 4) The Cavern and 5) Bar Opiume. Just remember to keep your ticket stubs after the Lucky Draw and present it while ordering drinks! Toast. Bottoms Up. Let's celebrate!

After that, just give us one week or so and you can check out http://www.flickr.com/people/oldschoolaffair for high resolution pictures of yourself or an eye candy perhaps! Cause photos, like memories are everlasting and hopefully, An Old School Affair will still be reminisced by you from time to time.

Only 2 more days to go! Check back for tabling tomorrow! Cheerios.

FAQ 5: What time should I reach The Fullerton Ballroom?

Optimal time to reach? I would say 1830 hours or earlier. Here's 3 good reasons why you should come early or at least on time! (In order of severity!! Really.)

1. The NDP Preview will ruin it reason.
As you know, National Day is coming so there will be NDP rehearsals. And that means roads will be closed, which will lead to jams, jams and jams near the Marina Bay. We heard from the events company that the jams were so bad, some of the guests reached at only 9+++ (Oh my gosh!) for one similar event.

I'll just put this map here, anyone who knows how to read a map is free to use it!

Also, Weiliang (such a darling!) has so kindly researched on the roads that will be closed for NDP rehearsals. The Fullerton hotel is reachable by Esplanade Drive via Nicol Highway, Raffles Boulevard and Raffles Ave. After Esplanade Drive, most drive straight to Shenton Way to get to The Fullerton. However, these roads are closed for the entire day so please do not come from that side. Instead, drive from Shenton Way, towards Esplanade Drive (the road closure), but still, expect a jam, because it's the NDP Preview.

What we suggest however, is that perhaps you should not drive, maybe you should park somewhere further, or really, just come earlier. The roads should start congesting by 5pm so it's really not worth it to take the risk. PUBLIC TRANSPORT is the best as it is the least risky.
For more info, check out http://www.ndp.org.sg/articles/news/traffic/index.html.

2. The lots of things to do don't fret about waiting reason.
"We totally abhore and cannot tolerate waiting!" -Bet you must be thinking what you can do if you're early? We have LOADS of pre-Ball activities for you to engage in! These include caricature, silhouette cutting, crystal tattooing and photo printing etc! We also have customised backdrops for you to take pictures with and a cocktail reception. All these are free of charge, so stretch your 60 bucks and make it worthwhile. Basically, there's lots to do, so better early than late!

3. The early bird catches the worm(s) reason.

So what are the worms to be caught? Early birds get the complimentary parking coupons. Early birds get free corkage waiver (limited to 1 bottle per table, we have 15 to give out!). Early birds get to not queue for caricature, photo taking etc. Early birds get to take more photos with friends. Early birds get to spend more quality time with friends etc etc etc.. So come early! You won't regret it, I promise.

See you then 1830 hours at The Fullerton! 4 more days! Keep checking back!
